Learning Aims

This session aims to give the principles and practice of vascular access device (VAD) management including;

  1. Understand the principles of safe delivery of intravenous therapy
  2. Understand the types of vascular access devices available
  3. Care and maintenance of vascular access devices, including:
  • Peripheral intravenous cannula
  • Midline
  • Central venous access devices (non-tunneled)
  • Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC)
  • Tunneled lines (Hickman)
  • Totally implantable (Port-a-cath)
  1. Understand the principles of safe delivery of parenteral nutrition
  2. How to recognise VAD complications and their management
