Revised Clinical Endoscopist (CE) Competency Assessment Portfolio

The Non-Medical Endoscopist competency assessment portfolio was published in 2015 to provide a framework for training and education for registered healthcare professionals that were not doctors, who were learning and undertaking GI endoscopy.

The portfolio has been used and independently marked for over 550 practitioners and formed the basis of a Health Education England (now NHS England Workforce, training, and education) national endoscopy training programme. Since 2017, the term non-medical endoscopist has been replaced by clinical endoscopist, and this is used throughout the updated document.

In 2017, Health Education England and NHS England and NHS Improvement worked in partnership to develop a national framework for advanced clinical practice, which ensures that there is national consistency and understanding about advanced level practice. As well as recording initial competence and training, it can be personalised with additional competencies from the Skills for Health Function Map as a portal for ongoing evidence to demonstrate enhanced and advanced practice and standardised roles.

In 2022, Physician Associates (PAs), medically trained, generalist healthcare professionals, who work alongside doctors and provide medical care as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team have been eligible to train and undertake GI endoscopy.
From 2023, delivery of clinical endoscopist training has moved under the remit of the seven regional endoscopy academies in England.
