Simulation Training in Psychiatry for Medical Education: A Review

Aim: To discuss conceptual and practical features of Simulation-Based Education (SBE) in psychiatry that may support or limit its development to encourage clinicians and educators to consider the implementation of SBE in their practice.

Method: Arguments based on two main sources: the principles of SBE, the context of its development, and the specific literature on SBE in psychiatry. This paper searched for the main historical texts which supported SBE development and the recognised guidelines to implement SBE based on updated evidence.

Findings: SBE can benefit from its further implementation and development within mental health education, arguing for clinicians and patients to engage with this powerful pedagogical tool.

Contribution: This article reflects the practical experiences of psychiatrists and multi-professional teams working in clinical education and SBE for several years.
