Exploring Gene Ontology, GO annotations, tools and resources
The Gene Ontology (GO) resource is the world's most comprehensive source of information about the function of gene products (proteins and non-coding RNAs). The GO consists of two main components: anontologyof terms that describe biological phenomena andannotationsthat connect gene products to ontology terms. In addition, GO develops tools to help researchers make use of the GO in their analyses.
This webinar will provide an overview of what GO terms are and how they relate within the structure of the ontology. It will also describe how annotations are created and highlight some of the limitations of the GO. Lastly it will introduce some freely available bioinformatic resources used for accessing the GO, and methods used in GO analysis
Who is this course for?
This webinar is suitable for any researcher in life sciences with an interest in molecular biology. No prior knowledge of bioinformatics is required, but an undergraduate level knowledge of biology would be useful.
Outcomes
By the end of the webinar you will be able to:
- Explain what the gene ontology is, and its limitations
- Explore where to access GO annotations
- Identify tools and methods used in GO analysis
