Operating Department Practitioner Virtual Reality to support preparing learners for practice (RePAIR)

Not yet rated

There is a 20% attrition rate of Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) learners on direct entry degree programmes in the Northwest. The project aimed to:

  1. Prepare ODP learners for their first practice placement in the theatre environment
  2. Prepare ODP learners to address and respond to challenging situations they may come across during practice learning
  3. Reduce the attrition rate of ODP learners.

We created three virtual reality films introducing the learner to the operating theatre environment and the interactions they may encounter. The films were shown to learners within the university setting as part of their “introduction to practice” learning module prior to their first placement. The scenarios were:

  1. Operating Theatre tour
  2. Operating Theatre attire
  3. When things don’t go to plan.
