Learning from the NHS Live Event 5: Birmingham SEND Schools - Recording

Not yet rated

The aim of the Online Work-Related Learning Programme was to help improve outcomes for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), narrow the skills gap, tap into a hidden talent pool, share information regarding NHS careers and pilot an online work-related learning offer.

3 schools participated in the pilot with 10 students from each school attending. It was the first time ever that the students had met employers and participated in online work-related learning. The feedback from teachers, students, parents and employers was overwhelmingly positive. Students learnt about the NHS, roles and pathways into the organisation, employability skills such as confidence, communication, teamwork and digital skills. Staff at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (BSMHFT) gained access to a traditionally hard to reach audience of young people with disabilities and benefitted just as much (if not more) from working with the students.

During this event the partnership of BSMHFT & Birmingham Careers Hub (supported by the Careers & Enterprise Company):

  • Shared how and why the programme was created, including the content of the programme
  • Provided some of the core lessons learnt during its development
  • Shared plans to continue to widen participation with this disadvantaged cohort of students
