Learning from the NHS Live Event 7: Healthcare Experience Programme Recording

Not yet rated

Yeovil District Hospital offers a 1-week Healthcare Experience Programme throughout the year, providing young people aged 16-24 with an opportunity to visit a variety of patient-facing environments within an Acute hospital setting.

The programme welcomes 1 student per week, enabling insight into a range of career possibilities and discussion between staff, patients and students. Since the programme’s implementation in November 2013, it has welcomed 292 students. In Autumn 2017, the local college asked the hospital if it would join them in piloting extended industry placements for the student’s BTEC Level 3 Health & Social Care students, in preparation for eventual T-level implementation.

The Healthcare Experience programme became the student’s Year 1 placement, with extended industry placement offered in Year 2. The feedback from students completing the programme has been consistently positive and has either re-enforced the student’s career aspirations or opened minds to other career possibilities.

During this event, Yeovil Hospital’s Careers and Workplace Experience Coordinator:

  • Shared how and why the Programme was created.
  • Shared some of the content.
  • Provided some of the core lessons learnt during its development
