Managing complications and looking ahead in thalassaemia
Certificate available: complete this course to be awarded a certificate
In this session, we focus on the long-term complications of thalassaemia, how they can be prevented and managed, and how advances in treatment are reshaping the future for patients.
A major theme is iron overload, which is a predictable and largely preventable complication of both transfusion-dependent and non–
transfusion-dependent thalassaemia. We will explore why it happens, how it is monitored, and the treatments available. We’ll also look at how to support patients in staying adherent to what is often a lifelong therapy.
Finally, we will turn to curative approaches, such as stem cell transplantation and gene therapy, to consider the opportunities and challenges they bring.
