Case report session 9: Endocrinology – Thyroid diseases
This case report from Dr Charles Van Heyningen and Bilal Ahmed looks at a 42-year-old woman with palpitations, elevated thyroid hormones and a normal TSH. Further biochemical, immunological, genetic and radiological investigations suggested a pituitary micro-adenoma or resistance to thyroid hormone action (Refetoff syndrome). The differential diagnosis and further management are discussed and learning points on resistance to thyroid hormones are identified. Epidemiological data on thyroid disease in Africa is shown, and interpretative comments for reporting of results are considered.
