Case report session 5: Endocrinology – Water and electrolyte disorder

Miss Isobel Hambleton presents this case study of a 9 year old girl presenting with hypernatraemia, excessive thirst and polyuria. A water deprivation test is diagnostic of Diabetes Insipidus. MRI and CT imaging of the brain reveals an adenoma on the pituitary gland which results in loss of pituitary function and visual field abnormalities. The main themes of the discussion will be sodium homeostasis, the investigation of polyuria and pituitary function testing.
