Mouthcare Guide to support Lift the Lip (Mouth Check)
The Mini Mouth Care Matters mouth care guide is a visual reference tool designed to be used alongside the mouth check. Once the mouth check has been completed, this guide supports health visiting teamsin interpreting their findings and identifying the appropriate next steps for the children and young people in their care.
Using clear photographic examples, the guide illustrates what to look for across two key areas: the teeth and the soft tissues. Images are organised by traffic light category, showing examples of healthy teeth and gums, early signs of concern such as tooth wear, early decay or inflamed gums, and higher risk findings including decayed, broken or knocked teeth and swollen gums or face with or without pus.
Each traffic light category is linked to a clear action. Green findings prompt reassurance and a recap of universal oral health advice. Amber findings prompt oral health advice and a recommendation to book a routine dental appointment. Red findings require oral health advice and an urgent dental referral.
This guide is an essential companion resource to the mouth check tool, helping health visiting teamsfeel confident in what they are seeing and what to do next. It supports consistent, timely decision-making and helps ensure that children and young people receive the right care at the right time.
