Yorkshire Slang Glossary 2022

Not yet rated

This resource is for people working across Yorkshire & the Humber, giving them access to slang words commonly found in the 3 local areas that the general publicmay use when having a consultation. This is particularly apparent with anatomical words or bodily functions, some of which may be considered offensive. We would recommend that trainees note any new words heard in consultation or conversation, and ask for clarification from the speaker or from their trainer, so learning takes place in context. Don’t be afraid to ask – even those of us who have been here for years are still learning new words!

Additional information

This glossary was originally written 25 years ago, and has been updated in 2022 by a group of GPs working across the region. It is not intended to be exhaustive, but demonstrates the rich variety of dialect words used in Yorkshire.
