The Memory Activity Treatment Guide
The memory assessment treatment guide (MATG) is a recource that can be applied with the individual who is experiencing a loss of everyday function and quality of life.Within the guide are activities for the individual to follow or to be supported to follow that can offer physical and cognitive rehabilitation. There is a recovery element to the guide in the sense of offering the individual with memory difficulties respite from any anxities or low mood atributed to a loss of the many activities they now struggle to perform. The MATG follows the rehabilitation model and there is a strong emphasis upon the individual still being able to participate in meaningful activities to meet their quality of life needs.
The guide was developed and co written with individuals experiencing memory difficulties and they guided the authors with the content, the colours and the style of the guide. The guide was written for individuals who have a diagnosis of dementia and/or mild cognitive impairment and it can be applied to other areas of practice such as stroke, brain injury, anxiety, depression and many others.
The guide can be applied by a wide range of health and social care professionals including care home staff. The guide is easy to follow and can be applied 1:1 or in small groups.
Reabling the individual with cognitive and physical difficultesis a key to message concerning living well with a long term condition such as mild cognitive impairement and/or dementia. This guide has the opportunity to reach out and meet the needs of individuals and enable the personto experience wellness again.
Additional information
The resource was developed by two occupational therapists working alongside individuals experiencing memory difficulties in a memory assessment service. It is an occupational therapy led resource that can positively impact the lives of individuals.
