Safety netting patients during the COVID-19 pandemic
Urgent referrals for suspected lung cancer have seen a sustained reduction COVID-19 pandemic with urgent referrals 35%* lower in England and Wales from March‒November compared to the same period in 2019, which translates to; around 17,800 fewer people* on an urgent referral for suspected lung cancer in England and Wales
*While these data are just for England and Wales we anticipate the picture is similar in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The challenge of diagnosing lung cancer is being further complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is therefore more important than ever to highlight the need for HPs to be alert to the risk of lung cancer in patients.
Consistent safety netting is important to implement across practice. It aims to ensure patients are monitored until signs and symptoms are explained or resolved and involves patient communication around next steps and follow-up.
