Case Study - University of Sunderland - Embedding Simulation into Paramedic Curricula

Not yet rated

In October 2022, the North East & Yorkshire Regional Allied Health Professions team commissioned a Deep Dive into practice-based learning for Paramedic learners across the region.

Paramedic Pre-registration education is provided across the four Integrated Care Systems of North East North Cumbria, Humber & North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire. This amounts to

  • 7 Higher Education Institutes

  • 10 Pre-registration programmes across BSc, BSc Apprentice and Pre-registration Masters platforms.

  • 2 NHS Ambulance Service Trusts providing ambulance practice based practice learning

  • Countless non-ambulance service practice based learning environments across acute, mental health, primary care and PIVO organisations

As part of the stakeholder engagement, discussions were held with partners involved in Paramedic Pre-registration education across and areas of good practice were apparent across the region in areas such as programme design, use of innovative practice-based learning environments not traditionally seen and the use of simulation, technology enhanced learning and simulation. To shine a spotlight on this, partners were asked to provide examples of innovation in the form of case studies. Three out of the four Integrated Care Systems responded.

Each partner was asked the same four questions.

  • Tell us what happened to lead you to think about the need for change?

  • What steps did you take to implement the change?

  • What has the outcome of the change been?

  • What advice would you give to someone looking to make similar changes in practice-based learning?

A key contact was shared for each case study so that anyone feeling inspired to make similar changes could find support on their own journey. Consent has been gained to publish names and email addresses.
