Dental caries is an almost entirely preventable condition, yet it is shockingly prevalent and remains the most common cause for hospital admissions for children in England.

Evidence shows that dental caries and obesity share a number of common risk factors (such as high intake of free sugars), and many studies have shown associations between dental caries and obesity in children and adolescents. Interventions to tackle such risk factors therefore have the potential to positively impact both diseases.

Obesity affects one in four children in the UK and can increase the likelihood of a child developing serious health issues such as Type 2 diabetes, liver conditions and early heart disease.

Complications from Excess Weight (CEW) clinics aim to use a holistic approach to treating conditions related to obesity in children and young people (CYP). Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team linked to a specialist children’s hospital, and there are 21 established centres across England (as of June 2023).

The principles of Mini MCM can be applied to CEW clinics in order to incorporate oral health care into the essential, holistic care of these CYP. This module aims to empower all members of the CEW team to take ownership of the oral health care of the CYP attending CEW clinics.
