Shared Decision Making
Shared decision making (SDM) is widely recognised as a collaborative process that facilitates a patient’s empowerment and engagement in decisions about preferred treatment choices and care planning. It sits clearly with the NHS long term plan to make personalised care universal and to give control to individuals over their mental and physical health. SDM is also a legal requirement, following the ruling by the UK Supreme Court in the case of Montgomery versus Lanarkshire Health Board (2015) and intrinsic to informed consent and professional values and professional codes of conduct. There is also NICE guidance for SDM surrounding everyday clinical practice.
