The session objectives include:

  • being aware of the consequences poorly managed constipation can have on a person's life
  • developing an awareness of A&E's role in managing idiopathic constipation, preventing further A&E attendances or Secondary care referrals
  • having awareness of RED FLAGS- what is not idiopathic constipation and needs secondary care interventions
  • awareness of all medications available to use (BNF/NICE Guidance) to treat idiopathic constipation in A&E and the role of PR medications
  • promoting Gateshead Paediatric Guidelines/Protocols and Paediatric Care Standards
  • awareness of the need for reasonable adjustments for children and families while in hospital being mindful of undiagnosed conditions
  • an awareness of other professionals who can support children managing Idiopathic Constipation in the Community
