According to NICE guidance, play improves children’s ability to cope by reducing fear and anxiety and by creating a calm environment for interventions and procedures. Evidence shows that play can mitigate the risk of trauma, reduce the need for medication, and help avoid failed attempts at treatment. Every interaction counts, and government guidance recommends the use of play techniques across the multidisciplinary teams caring for children.
