Aim
To assist Children's Community Nurses to achieve competency in paediatric tracheostomy care and management within the community setting. You must acknowledge any limitations in knowledge and skills and must not perform clinical activities if you do not feel competent to do so.
Audience:Children's Community Nurses
Duration:30 minutes
Learning Objectives:
- Demonstrate and discuss tracheostomy care and management to the level of competency that is required
- Define a tracheostomy and discuss reasons why patients may require a tracheostomy
- Describe the procedure for tracheal suctioning
- List the essential equipment for the emergency tracheostomy box
- Identify the correct sequence of actions to be taken in an emergency situation
