Aim

To standardise safe practice of administration, management and monitoring of patients receiving Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA).

Audience: Clinical staff

Duration: 60 minutes

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify what PCA is and the advantages and disadvantages of this technique
  • Describepump management, including programming checks and decontamination
  • Recognise, escalate and manage side effects of PCA when caring for patient
  • Discuss troubleshooting and managing step down analgesia from PCA
