272 Insertion of Male Catheters

The individual will demonstrate effective communication skills, by identifying the correct patient through a standard procedure, gaining consent and safely carry out the procedure of male urinary catheterisation.

All healthcare professionals who perform male urinary catheterisation, as part of their role, should have:

  • a good knowledge of the urinary tract anatomy and physiology 
  • a sound knowledge of the principles of aseptic technique 
  • a knowledge of equipment and devices available 
  • awareness of infection control practice and legislation 
  • practice within the limits of competence and be able to recognise when they need to seek help from more experienced staff 
  • understanding of the issues of informed consent and a knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA 20005)
  • the ability to deliver care based on the best available evidence or practice
