Statin Intolerance Pathway
Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in the UK. Statins are a group of medicines that can help lower the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the blood. A high level of LDL cholesterol is potentially dangerous as it can lead to:
- A hardening and narrowing of the arteries
- Cardiovascular disease
Statins are the cornerstone for prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with a substantial evidence of reduction of morbidity and mortality. They come in tablet form and are taken once a day. While statins are generally well tolerated, unwanted effects occur in some people and may lead to discontinuation.
