Numb and Number - an animated film about the difference between general and local anaesthetic

Not yet rated

Numb and Numb-er is an animated film aimed at children aged 4-10 and their families to give information and understanding to what happens in a local anaesthetic, to ease worries and concerns.

Local anaesthetics are safer, cheaper, they save time for the family and the hospital. Many children are scared of being awake during an operation in case it is painful, they have no idea what will happen or what it will be like. This film shows the procedure and normalises the process and make it less scary.

The film will help children having a simple operation in the hospital to make an informed decision about whether to have a local or general anaesthetic. Itdraws closely on the personal stories of children who have experienced a local anaesthetic before and after an operation as well as being guided by health professionals.

The Team

Richard Thomson and Mr Nick Wilson Jones (Surgeons from The Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery, Morriston Hospital, Swansea) contacted ForMed Films CIC with an idea to make a film to help children to choose between general and local anaesthetics.

The ForMed team shadowed and observed local anaesthetic procedure, taking notes, sketches and recordings, resulting in the production of a 3-minute film using real sounds from Morriston Hospital and a scripted voice over in English and Welsh.

ForMed Films is a not-for-profit, making animated films in collaboration with patients, charities and health professionals to help people talk about and understand medical and health issues. www.formedfilms.co.uk
