NHSE TEL Support: Medicines Optimisation: Calculating Drug Doses
Medicines are one of the most frequent treatment interventions given to patients in healthcare settings. All staff handling medicines must practice safely, which means:
- Being aware of the skills needed for accurate medicines calculations
- Being aware of own limitations, both capability and job responsibility
- Understanding the need for safety checks
- Being aware of hazards in calculating, dispensing and administration of medicines
Patient safety is our prime concern. Calculating the correct medicines dose is only one essential skill; there are a number of other related factors that staff should be aware of, in the practical application of safe handling and administration of medicines and the patients who require special consideration, e.g. children, the elderly and those with chronic conditions.
