The purpose of this e-patient scenario is to help you enhance your clinical reasoning. You will be presented with a clinical scenario relating toa new referral to orthoptics from the stroke team for a 40 year old male with suspected visual difficulties. Please work through all sections of the scenario in the order they are presented.

Learning Aims:

  • Consider the visual problems that can occur post-stroke
  • Understand the impact that these visual problems can have on a patient’s daily activities and quality of life
  • Appreciate the role of orthoptists in the rehabilitation of stroke patients and the importance of multi-disciplinary working
  • Consider the difference between homonymous hemianopia and visual neglect
  • Consider how communication difficulties post-stroke may impact the orthoptic assessment
  • Suggest appropriate advice and support options for this patient based on your clinical findings and evidence based practice/DVLA guidelines
