338 Insulin Safety: Getting It Right

With new initiatives enabling healthcare support workers to administer insulin it is important that staff receive all the required training to ensure that their knowledge and skills are sound, and to enable safe practice. This module forms part of that training and aims to ensure knowledge is current. In addition ALL who administer insulin will need to be competency assessed by their line managers and this assessment should be repeated annually.

At the end of this module you will: Have learned about insulin and where it is commonly used Have gained an understanding of different types of insulin and regimens including biosimilar and high concentration insulin Understand the need for correct injection technique Describe how often people on insulin therapy should monitor their blood glucose levels Be able to describe the common causes of insulin errors for prescribers, suppliers, and in those handling or administering insulin Understand the risks and safety precautions required when using insulin Be aware of how to use varying types of delivery systems safely
