Aims: To synthesise existing evidence on doctors’ personal, social and organisational needs when returning to clinical work after an absence.
Method: This study employed mixed methods as part of a systematic review.
Findings: The review identified four categories of personal needs: work-life balance, emotional regulation, self-perception and identity, and engagement with the return process. Social needs, examined in 17 studies, revolved around aspects of professional culture, relationships, and stigma linked to illness. Occupational health services, work design, and organisational culture were identified as organizational needs in 22 studies.
Contributions: The systematic review inform strategies for supporting healthcare professionals during transitional phase back to clinical work and identifies potential recommendations to facilitate a smoother re-entry process for doctors.
