Cyto - Gynae - L1 - D7*
Koilocytes: Squamous cells displaying empty appearing perinuclear cavity with irregular, sharply defined borders. The condensed rim of cytoplasm is intensely stained. Their presence merely indicates infection with HPV. It is not possible on morphology alone to identify the HPV subtype - Viral testing is required for this.
A koilocyte by defintion is always reported as low grade dyskaryosis even if the nucleus appears normal or near normal. The rest of the sample should always be screened to exclude any higher grade dyskaryosis present.,
