Ultraviolet Disinfection of Virtual Reality headsets used in Medical and Healthcare training - University of Nottingham

Introducing virtual reality (VR) into the University of Nottingham's healthcare curriculum highlighted concerns around sterility of the equipment between sessions, the time and resources required to achieve this and how we could be assured sterility had been achieved effectively to keep our students safe. We also had concerns around storing the equipment securely, whilst being able to efficiently charge all headsets. This case study discusses the findings from an evaluation of:

  • Achieving a safe and secure storage for 10 MetaQuest II virtual reality headsets and controllers.
  • Achieving a quick and efficient sterilisation of headsets between teaching sessions.
  • Enabling charging of headsets whilst stored.
