Nutrition - Core - CDEP
Nutrition is the cornerstone of the management of diabetes, however the advice will differ depending on the type of diabetes and the individual involved. One approach does not work for all! The evidence-based nutrition guidelines for the prevention and management of diabetes encourage health and social care workers to support people living with diabetes to focus on the importance of foods rather than focusing on nutrients such as percentage carbohydrate, fats, protein, etc. in the diet. In summary, the guidelines recommend: 1) An individualised approach to diet taking into consideration the person’s personal and cultural preferences. 2) People eat more vegetables, fruits, wholegrains, fish, nuts and pulses. 3) People eat less red and processed meat, refined carbohydrates and sugar-sweetened drinks. TOPIC TIPS... You do not have to complete the topic in one go... CDEP is designed to be done in 'bite-sized chunks' fitting into your busy life! This topic generally takes from 35 minutes to 2 hours to complete depending on your chosen CDEP level - although this may differ from person to person. There are a number of sections (competencies) within this topic, each with its own set of resources that may be useful to review should you require further support. However, undertaking the section itself is part of the learning process and will confirm or improve your current level of knowledge around that specific section, so why not jump straight in and have a go...
