Case Study: Developing the Nursing in Adult Prison Healthcare Settings programme
In this case study,NHS England’s Nursing in Adult Prison Healthcare Settings programme aimed to support and prepare students for practice learning in health and justice settings. It also aimed to support qualified nurses and nursing associates to transition to or explore future career opportunities in health and justice.
The programme highlights specific learning opportunities for pre-registration and registered nurses, and nursing associates to support the current nursing workforce in this area of practice, and signpost further information about career development opportunities.
The programme developed five bespoke learning scenarios that showcase the reality and opportunities of placements within health and justice settings. Filming took place in HMP Guys Marsh prison, captured using a 360-degree camera. The learning used immersive 360-degree video delivered in virtual reality to give learners a unique opportunity to experience working life in a prison environment, supporting their confidence and building interest in placements in that environment.
