Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment Framework - Chelsea and Westminster Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Case Study
The national framework provides practical guidance on how to apply the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s standards for student supervision and assessment (SSSA) across Nursing, Midwifery and Nursing Associate settings. It is aimed at practice supervisors, practice assessors, academic assessors, and those who support learners across the NHS, social care, and independent sectors.
The framework sets out 10 core principles to ensure consistent, high quality preparation and support for staff involved in supervising and assessing learners. These principles cover areas such as blended learning approaches, collaborative preparation between education providers and placement partners, maintaining accurate training records, ensuring expert-led teaching, protected time for assessment activities, standardised preparation content, strong communication between roles, and the use of a consistent feedback model.
The framework is available on the NHS Learning Hub Catalogue
In 2026, NHS England (London) supported 2 regional pilot sites with the aim of testing the unpublished framework materials and support readiness, by exploring the steps needed to implement and integrate the framework within their settings.Case studies have been created to share learning from the pilots, highlighting activities undertaken to meet the 10 high-level principles, making a significant contribution to enhancing the quality of student supervision and assessment. These are intended to support organisations with a regional approach to implementation, and may also be helpful to organisations in other regions.
