Foundation training for Freedom to Speak Up Guardians
Welcome to Foundation Training for Freedom to Speak Up Guardians. This training will help you to understand the functions and expectations of the Freedom to Speak Up Guardian role and how to perform it effectively. In this module we will learn about the background and scope of speaking up, why it matters, and the part you will play in improving the culture of your organisation and the broader healthcare environment.
All resources relevant to the Freedom to Speak Up Guardian role are available in the folders below. We encourage all new Guardians to review these materials alongside the training and utilise the workbook to support your learning and development.
Some resources link to guidance originally produced by the National Guardian’s Office (NGO). While the NGO closed in 2026, its guidance remains valid in relation to NHS Standard Contract and other legacy NGO materials continue to support Freedom to Speak Up practice. This content is now hosted on the National Archives website and is used throughout the training where relevant.
