Managing Type 2 Diabetes in Children and Young People

The Managing Type 2 Diabetes in Children and Young People programme recognises there is a knowledge and skills gap amongst health professionals caring for children and young adults with type 2 diabetes, leading to delivery of suboptimal care and poor health outcomes for patients.

This training offer and subsequent upskilling of health care professionals will help improve the care young adults with type 2 diabetes receive, ensuring macro and microvascular risk factors are identified early and appropriately managed – reducing risk of development of diabetes complications (such as amputations, kidney disease and cardiovascular disease). This will benefit children and young adults across their life course and reduce future health care costs.

This programme is made up of 6 learning sessions, consisting of:

Session 1: Diagnosis and initial management
Session 2: Glycaemic targets
Session 3: General lifestyle weight management and psychological interventions
Session 4: Pharmaceutical interventions
Session 5: Complications and comorbidities
Session 6: Young adult care 18 years and over

The elearning will support paediatric diabetes consultants, diabetes specialist nurses, dietitians, psychology staff and primary care staff.
