Generative AI

This learning pathway introduces AI and Generative AI, explores ethical considerations, and covers key technologies like Natural Language Processing (NLP), machine learning, and computer vision. It also highlights practical tools and applications, including working with large language models (LLMs).

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to computer technologies that learn from data to perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence, such as analysing information and making predictions, recommendations, or decisions. A subset of this, Generative AI (GenAI), creates new content—such as text, images, or music—through data-driven learning. Its ability to generate language has particularly captured public interest and presents promising opportunities for application within government.

This learning has been selected by the Central Digital and Data Office (CDDO). It was released to complement the Artificial Intelligence Framework for the UK Government, which provides guidance on the use of AI across government, but is applicable for NHS users as well.  The NHS Digital Academy has also carried out a review of this content through our own Subject Matter Experts

Learning assets have been organised into three user categories:

  • All staff who want to use generative AI more effectively and be aware of the pitfalls
  • Staff with responsibility for Generative AI  looking for non-technical resources aimed at covering the strategic opportunities and risks around generative AI
  • Digital and Data professionals, or those with a technical interest (DDaT/Technical Interest) looking for technical resources to build generative AI services
