Undertaking research
The conduct of health research is a primary function of the NHS. The NHS constitution outlines its commitment to innovation and to the promotion, conduct and use of research to improve the current and future health and care of the population. Studies have indicated that patients cared for in research-active environments have increased options, better monitoring and improved outcomes (Care Quality Commission, 2014). The Allied Health Professions Research and Innovation Strategy for England (2022) also promotes the acceleration of pace, stability and sustainability of research an innovation across all AHP disciplines, roles and settings.
Conducting or participating in research delivery in NHS settings requires compliance with formal research governance procedures as regulated by the Health Research Authority. Here you will find links to assist you in determining the differences between research, audit and service evaluation, and research governance information for those planning to undertake research. Local training for relevant research governance requirements that are necessary based on your role in a research project will also be available. Contact your local NHS research office for further information.
