Antimicrobials 3: antibiotic allergy

Aiming to demystify antimicrobials and their most effective use in modern medicine, this module covers the issue of antibiotic allergy as a barrier to effective treatment, with a particular focus on penicillin allergy.
Learning objectives:

- List the different types of hypersensitivity reaction and describe their differing characteristics;
- Describe the epidemiology and clinical implications of penicillin allergy;
- Explain how best to approach antimicrobial prescribing in patients with history of antibiotic allergy;
- Apply a safe approach to allergy de-labelling assessment in patients with spurious penicillin allergy labels.
