Malignant spinal cord compression (MSCC) happens when cancer grows in, or near, the spine and presses on the spinal cord and nerves. MSCC is a well recognised complication of cancer, it is potentially very serious and can result in permanent neurological deficit including paralysis.
MSCC is an oncological emergency and any suspected MSCC should be managed according to NICE guidelines and within set time frames. These are audited in national data audits.
