Polyoma virus nephropathy, usually caused by the BK virus strain is a common viral infection in renal allografts. It typically involves renal tubules and collecting ducts in a focal fashion causing characteristic inclusions in tubular epithelial cells that can be confirmed by immunohistochemical study using antibody to SV40T antigen. Early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention improves graft survival.
