Introduction to the Armed Forces Community - An educational module to support undergraduate nurses care for military veterans and their families.

It has been reported that veterans do not disclose detail of their military experiences to civilian clinicians as there is an assumption that such clinicians do not understand the specific needs of a veteran. With this in mind, this resource aims to educate nurses and healthcare practitioners to deliver optimum care to military veterans and their families by generating an understanding and insight into the Armed Forces Community. This, in turn, should positively enhance the wellbeing of military veterans and their families.

The programme is broken down into 6 chapters which cover areas such as the common physical and mental health issues impacting on veterans and their families and signals the available help. It also contains a series of animated videos following the Johnson family through their life and explores the struggles they face; which mirror those of many veterans and their families. This initiative can be accessed as a complete module or each chapter can be viewed as a stand-alone repository of information for anyone looking for specific information.

While the sessions have been shaped for a young clinical population within a teaching environment, they can be used as a resource by anyone working in, or interested in, veterans health and social care.
