Facilitator reflections on online delivery of simulation-based mental health education during COVID-19 (O'Sullivan et al., 2023)

Aims: To support the adaptation of online delivery of simulation-based education (SBE) in mental health.

Method: The authors reflect on the challenges they face when adapting their facilitation skills to the online environment and offers suggestions for improving the learner experience.

Findings: Beyond merely platform orientation and operating procedure familiarisation, the team gained insights into ensuring the most optimal learning experience, engagement, and participation. Moreover, delivery of online SBE has found to have several potential barriers to psychological safety.

Contributions: Optimising participant engagement and psychological safety remain key considerations. Facilitators must reframe their debriefing expectations and adjust how they engage participants and manage group dynamics given the inherently different nature and barriers of this new learning environment.
