Case-Based Discussion (CBD)

Not yet rated

A Case-Based Discussion (CBD) is a structured, retrospective assessment of your contribution to patient care. It focuses on evaluating your clinical decision-making, reasoning, and application of clinical knowledge in managing your own patients. This process provides an opportunity for reflective learning, identifying areas of strength, and highlighting areas for further development in practice.

This form of assessment involves an experienced colleague, practice supervisor, or tutor questioning you about the care you have provided for a patient. Through this discussion, the assessor explores your understanding of key clinical issues, including pharmacology, pathophysiology, monitoring, and patient counselling. Where relevant, the conversation may also address the ethical and legal framework surrounding your practice, providing an opportunity to reflect on the reasoning behind your decisions.

To maximise the learning experience, the discussion should conclude with you and your assessor collaboratively identifying key strengths, areas for development, and an action plan to support your ongoing professional growth.
