Simulation training for police and ambulance services to improve mental health practice

Aims: Evaluate the effectiveness of mental health simulation training for police and ambulance staff to develop competencies in emergency staff.

Method: 199 Participants attended a one-day simulation training course to promote effective and professional responses to mental health crises, including one of six simulated scenarios. They then completed structured debriefings with expert facilitators.

Findings: There were improvements in self-efficacy and attitudes towards mental illness, including improved procedural knowledge, self-efficacy, person-centred care and interprofessional collaboration.

Contribution: Mental health simulation is an effective training technique for police and ambulance staff working with people with mental health needs. It can also potentially improve community-based responses to mental health crises.
