Age of Red Blood Cells

5 out of 5 (2 ratings)

This letter was circulated by NHSBT in November 2023, detailing changes made to recommendations surrounding the age of red blood cells at the time of transfusion.

Previous guidance had recommended the use of 'fresher' red cells for certain patient groups. There is however relatively little evidence to support the recommendation to support fresher units to adult patients, including those with haemoglobinopathies. This letter provides information on which patient groups require the age restriction to still be applied, namely neonates and infants <1 year old.

Part of the evidence base for the decision making in the letter above has come from the2018 Cochrane Review onTransfusion of red blood cells stored for shorter versus longer duration for all conditions.
