The aim was to scope the multi-professional AHP educationalresource and leadership across London.

The objectives to achieve this were to:

• Investigate where AHP Education (AHPE) posts exist within NHS trusts.
• Scope multifaceted elements of these roles such as:
  -specific information about the roles themselves,
  -details about current post holders
  -barriers to the development of these roles including educational attainment and requirements.

The importance of the education workforce within NHS has been highlighted in numerous NHS andDepartment of Health publications over recent years. This workforce will be pivotal to the successfulimplementation of the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan (LTWP). It was identified that the educationalresource and leadership that exists within London NHS trusts had not been measured, withoutbaseline data it is difficult to plan for the future of this workforce and optimise its capability.
An Allied Health Professional educator (AHPE) role was defined as “Working in a role with protectedtime for education coordination or strategy”. LAS and paramedics were out of scope for this project.A survey was distributed to staff members that identified as matching the inclusion criteria. Thesurvey closed at the end of March, with 91 complete data sets and a total response rate of 81%(114/140).
Twenty-five London NHS trusts out of an expected thirty-three returned data (76%), indicating thateight may have no AHPE capacity. If equally distributed each AHPE in London would be responsiblefor 195 AHPs. The ratio’s varied between the five London ICBs, with a range of 142 - 291.
