AI for All An introduction to AI
This short course introduces artificial intelligence (AI) in the Civil Service and sets the stage for further learning. It begins with a welcome video from Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister Darren Jones, encouraging civil servants to embrace AI as a shared learning moment.
You will explore a timeline of AI adoption in government, reflect on how AI already shapes everyday life, and consider its potential to improve public services.
A case study from the Met Office shows how curiosity and leadership helped staff navigate change. You’ll be prompted to consider how AI already influences your decisions, tools, and interactions - even if you haven’t noticed it yet.
Through reflection and real-world examples, this module builds foundational awareness of AI’s role in modern government and its relevance to your work.
It is designed to be inclusive and accessible, regardless of your technical background.
If appropriate, you should complete the follow-on course:
“AI for All: Building Practical AI Skills in the Civil Service”, which builds on the foundations introduced here and offers practical guidance for using AI confidently and responsibly.
This course is part of One Big Thing 2025, supporting civil servants to build confidence and capability in using AI ethically, effectively, and with purpose.
