Part 2 - Building Practical AI Skills in the Civil Service

This course builds on the introductory module, offering practical guidance and deeper insight into how artificial intelligence (AI) is shaping public service delivery.

Across three short segments, you will explore what AI is and how it works, including key technologies and terminology such as Generative AI.

You will hear expert advice from Dr Laura Gilbert on avoiding common pitfalls, and learn how to apply the principles of responsible AI use from the government’s AI Playbook.

You will see how civil servants are already using AI to solve problems and improve productivity, through ten short video examples. These real-world stories show how AI can support decision-making, streamline tasks, and unlock new ways of working.

Finally, you will have the chance to experiment with an approved AI tool, applying what you have learned in a safe and supported environment.

This course is part of One Big Thing 2025 and is designed to help you build confidence, develop practical skills, and make informed choices about using AI in your role.

Outcomes
