Diet and LipidManagement (module 3)

The most impactful dietary change for lowering LDL-C and CVD risk is improving the fat profile of the diet – the key to this is replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats.

Following the recommendations of the Eatwell guide will improve overall CVD outcomes and lower LDL-C. However, improving the fat profile of the diet is pivotal and should form the foundations of a heart healthy and cholesterol-lowering dietary plan.

This module is therefore dedicated to fats and understanding how they influence blood cholesterol and CVD risk, along with the practical applications.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the pivotal role of saturated fat in the diet
  • Recognise the role of other key fats in the diet and their relevance
  • Be aware of different organisations’ fat intake recommendations for optimum serum lipids and cardiovascular health compared to current UK intakes
  • Appreciate that foods replacing saturated fat in the diet determine the impact on serum lipid profile and overall cardiovascular health
  • Confidently advise patients in balancing fats
  • Understand what fuels controversies about current saturated fat recommendations
  • Offer specific advice to lower elevated triglyceride levels
