The aim of this module is to increase your knowledge of the MCA and put it in context within a community and primary care setting. Having completed the module, you should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the following objectives:

Consent
How the MCA affects those working in community and primary care
Guidance on how to determine if a person lacks capacity
Understand the role of an Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA) and the process for referral
Explore the role and duties of a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)
Gain awareness of the functions of the Court of Protection (CoP) and the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG)
Understanding the requirements of an Advance Decision to refuse treatment
Effects of the new offences and protection for carers and professsionals.
Awareness of the Mental Health Act
